Zhejiang Ocean University is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the People's Government of Zhejiang Province. It is one of the key universities in Zhejiang Province. The school was founded in 1958 and was originally named Zhoushan Fisheries College. It was renamed Zhejiang Fisheries College in 1975. In 1998, it merged with Zhoushan Normal College to form Zhejiang Ocean University. After 2000, Zhoushan Health School, Zhejiang Fisheries School, Zhejiang Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Zhoushan Petrochemical School and Zhoushan Commercial School and other schools (units) were successively merged (entered). In 2016, it was renamed as the current name. The construction and development of the school has always received the cordial care and strong support of the leaders of the Party and the country. General Secretary Xi Jinping visited the school twice during his tenure in Zhejiang to inspect and guide the work. He fully affirmed the school's insistence on running schools on islands and asked the school to continue to take the road of hard struggle, focus on local economic construction, strive to run with characteristics, and contribute to the development of the province's marine economy. The school currently has two campuses, Xincheng and Dinghai. The campus environment is beautiful and the scenery is pleasant. It is an ideal place to study. The school covers a total area of 2,608 mu (of which 720 mu is sea area), with a building area of 534,000 square meters, 2.09 million paper books, and teaching and research equipment assets exceeding 526 million yuan. It has 11 colleges and scientific research institutions such as the Zhejiang Marine Fisheries Research Institute. It carries out postgraduate education, general undergraduate education, continuing education and education for international students, and jointly trains doctoral students with foreign universities. It has disciplines such as science, agriculture, engineering, management, economics, literature, history, and education. There is currently one provincial advantage and characteristic discipline, one provincial first-class discipline of Class A, and six provincial first-class disciplines of Class B. Among them, the marine science discipline ranks fifth in the fourth round of discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education, and the aquatic discipline ranks eighth. Four disciplines of plant and animal science, agricultural science, engineering, and chemistry are among the top 1% in the world of ESI. It has 9 first-level master's degree programs in marine science, aquatic products, shipbuilding and marine engineering, petroleum and natural gas engineering, food science and engineering, agricultural and forestry economic management, mechanical engineering, mathematics, and water conservancy engineering, and 8 professional master's degree programs in transportation, agriculture, education, tourism management, pharmacy, resources and environment, civil engineering and water conservancy, biology and medicine, and has the right to confer master's degrees of equivalent academic qualifications. There are 46 undergraduate majors, including 6 national first-class undergraduate majors, 2 national characteristic majors, 13 provincial first-class undergraduate majors, 9 provincial key majors, 7 provincial advantageous majors, and 8 provincial characteristic majors. There are 17,356 full-time students of various types; 1,607 faculty and staff, including 1,232 full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, 731 have doctoral degrees, 546 have senior professional and technical positions, including 202 senior technical positions. There are 6 dual-appointed academicians, more than 50 national talents, more than 110 provincial talents, and 10 provincial teaching and scientific and technological innovation teams. The school adheres to the social demand-oriented approach and is committed to cultivating comprehensive and compound talents. The teaching achievements have won 2 national second prizes. In the past five years, it has won 6 provincial first prizes and 3 second prizes for teaching achievements. The school is a pilot university for the Ministry of Education's new engineering research and practice project, the Ministry of Education's new agricultural research and reform practice project, and the National Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program Reform Project. It has built a national experimental teaching demonstration center, a national college student off-campus practice education base, a National Natural Science Foundation of China field internship base (co-construction) and the country's first island field survival teaching experimental base. It is the only national innovative talent training demonstration base (co-construction) among marine universities. In the past five years, students have won more than 220 national awards and more than 2,900 provincial and ministerial awards in various subject competitions. The school has been rated as a demonstrative entrepreneurial college of ordinary colleges and universities in Zhejiang Province, an advanced unit for research and practice of entrepreneurship education in colleges and universities across the country, and a typical university with typical experience in deepening the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education across the country. It has been listed as a national college student innovation and entrepreneurship training program project implementation university, and the college student maker space has been selected as a provincial maker space. The school focuses on the major strategic needs of the country and the needs of local economic and social development, constantly improves the scientific research and innovation system, and strives to improve the level of scientific research and innovation capabilities. The scientific research results have won the first, second and third prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and 13 National Science Conference Awards. In the past five years, a total of 155 national scientific research projects such as national key R&D projects and more than 340 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects have been presided over, with an annual scientific research fund of more than 150 million yuan; 20 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievement awards and 52 important social force awards have been won. There are national marine facility breeding engineering technology research center, national and local joint engineering research center for the exploration and utilization of marine biological germplasm resources, national and local joint engineering research center for port oil and gas storage and transportation technology, international scientific and technological cooperation base for marine breeding engineering technology, and 28 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, engineering laboratories, engineering technology research centers, collaborative innovation centers and other scientific research platforms. Xixuan Fishery Science and Technology Island has been built, with two scientific research ships, "Zhehai Science No. 1" and "Zhejiang Fishery Science No. 2", of which "Zhehai Science No. 1" has entered the sequence of national marine scientific research ships. The Journal of Zhejiang Ocean University (Natural Science Edition, Humanities and Social Sciences Edition) is published, and the Zhejiang Branch of the National Ocean Press is set up. With social services as the carrier, the school has established a new school-local cooperation development model of "Zhejiang Ocean University + city, outside the city + industry associations + key enterprises" that fully relies on the school's distinctive discipline advantages and faces related industries, forming a new social service mechanism with the characteristics of Zhejiang Ocean University, and continuously improving the overall level of social services. In recent years, it has actively promoted the integration of industry, academia and research, and deeply participated in major industrial upgrading projects such as "deep processing of aquatic products", "machine replacement, intelligent manufacturing", "wild yellow croaker resource reconstruction", and "chemical park air pollution control". A number of local science and technology innovation service platforms such as the Zhejiang Zhoushan Archipelago New Area University Science and Technology Park, Dinghai Research Institute, and Putuo Research Institute have been jointly built with local decision-making advisory institutions such as the Zhejiang Zhoushan Archipelago New Area Research Center and the China (Zhejiang) Free Trade Pilot Zone Research Institute. The school has successively won the honorary titles of "Advanced Collective of Zhejiang Science and Technology Special Envoys" and "National Three Rural Science and Technology Service Golden Bridge Award Collective Award". The school actively promotes the internationalization of education, deepens cooperation and exchanges with foreign universities and research institutions, and carries out various forms of education and scientific research cooperation. It has established teaching and scientific research cooperation with 55 foreign universities and research institutes, and jointly established the Zhejiang Ocean University Pisa Marine Graduate School with the University of Pisa in Italy. It has carried out 6 joint training doctoral programs and multiple double master programs with universities such as the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology in Japan, and South Ural State University in Russia. Cooperate with the St. Petersburg State University of Marine Technology in Russia to organize a double bachelor's degree program in undergraduate education in ship and ocean engineering. The undergraduate major in marine science is the first batch of international majors in Zhejiang Province. The school is a qualified unit for the training of foreign students with Chinese government scholarships, an undergraduate enrollment and training unit in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, a unit of the "Belt and Road" South-South Cooperation Agricultural Education Science and Technology Innovation Alliance, and a member of the China-Central and Eastern Europe "17+1" National University Association. It has established the Zhejiang. Thailand Progressive Maritime Silk Road College and has the only Russian language level examination site of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science in the province.
