Beijing International Studies University (BISU) is a high-level and distinctive university jointly established by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Beijing Municipal People's Government. It is a famous university with foreign languages as its main body, tourism as its feature, and multi-disciplinary coordinated development. It is an important base for the training and research of talents in foreign languages, translation, tourism, economy and trade in China. BISU was proposed by Premier Zhou Enlai himself and was established in October 1964 on the basis of the former Xinhua News Agency Foreign Language Cadre School. It is one of the first batch of undergraduate colleges in the country. It has been successively under the leadership of the State Council for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Beijing Municipal People's Government, the Ministry of Education and the National Tourism Administration. In February 2000, it was transferred to the management of the Beijing Municipal People's Government. In March 2022, it was jointly established by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Beijing Municipal People's Government. Since its establishment, the school has adhered to the school motto of "Mingde, Diligent Learning, Seeking Truth, and Competing First", and has formed a style of study of "integrating Chinese and foreign, combining knowledge and practice" and a teaching style of "harmony and ease, thinking, and humanization". Li Yueran, Su Qi, Zhou Xiqing, Dong Leshan, Guan Zhenhu, Li Chuansong, Wang Zhiyou, Wang Wenjiong, Shu Yu and other senior translators in the early period of New China have all been engaged in teaching and promoting literature in the school. Tens of thousands of graduates from the Second Foreign Language School are all over the country and all over the world, including Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gao Hucheng, former Minister of Commerce, Liu Hongcai and Xu Luping, former Vice Ministers of the International Liaison Department, Cheng Guoping, former Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chen Jian, former Vice Minister of Commerce, Wu Sike, former Chinese government special envoy for the Middle East, Chang Zhenming, former Party Secretary and Chairman of CITIC Group, Jiang Bo, former Vice President of Tongji University, Liu Shijun, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the World Tourism Alliance, and a group of outstanding people in politics, diplomacy, business, culture and education. The school is located in Chaoyang District, Beijing, adjacent to the Central Business District (CBD) in the west and close to the Beijing Urban Sub-Center (Tongzhou) in the east. There are 19 teaching units, including the School of English, the School of Japanese, the School of Asia, the School of Europe, the School of the Middle East, the School of Advanced Translation, the School of Tourism Science, the School of Business, the School of Economics, the School of Party Diplomacy, the School of Culture and Communication, the School of Chinese, the School of Marxism, the Department of Physical Education, the Department of Basic Sciences, the School of Continuing Education, the School of International Education, and the School of Regional and Country Studies. There are more than 10,000 students of all kinds, including more than 6,800 undergraduates, more than 1,800 postgraduates, more than 1,100 international students, and more than 700 Continuing Education students. There are nearly 1,000 faculty members, including 2 national excellent teaching teams, 1 Huang Danian-style teacher team in national universities, 4 Beijing excellent teaching teams, 2 national talent projects, 2 translation lifelong cultural achievement awards, the Ministry of Education's New Century Excellent Talents, the Ministry of Education's Overseas Talents Special Project, Beijing's overseas high-level talents, senior translators, and more than 40 provincial and ministerial talents. The school also employs more than 130 part-time professors, industry mentors, etc., and has more than 50 foreign experts. The school currently has 48 undergraduate majors (including 31 language majors), 5 first-level master's degree authorization points, 30 second-level master's degree authorization points, 6 professional master's degree authorization points, 2 joint training doctoral programs (joint training of translation doctor with Binghamton University in the United States, and joint training of tourism doctor with the University of South Carolina in the United States), and 2 postdoctoral research workstations (jointly established with Social Sciences Academic Press and Capital University of Economics and Business respectively). There are 2 high-tech disciplines in Beijing universities (tourism management and foreign languages and literature), 4 key disciplines in Beijing (foreign languages and literature, tourism management, business management, and international trade); 15 first-class undergraduate majors in the national "Double 10,000 Plan" (English, Business English, Japanese, Korean, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Persian, translation, tourism management, hotel management, and financial management), 4 national characteristic majors (Japanese, Arabic, English, and tourism management), 14 first-class undergraduate majors in the "Double 10,000 Plan" in Beijing (Hindi, Italian, Hungarian, Serbian, Estonian, exhibition economy and management, marketing, finance, international economy and trade, trade economy, Chinese language and literature, Chinese international education, journalism, international affairs and international relations), 2 first-class majors in Beijing (translation and tourism management), and 1 major in the comprehensive reform pilot of the Ministry of Education (Japanese). The school insists on serving the national strategy and the needs of the capital as its orientation, and concentrates its advantages to build two school-level scientific research platforms for regional countries and the interpretation of Chinese civilization and international communication. There are nearly 40 scientific research institutions, including the China Culture and Tourism Industry Research Institute, the China Tourism Talent Development Research Institute, the China Culture and Tourism Big Data Research Institute, the China Regional and Country Advanced Research Institute, the China "Belt and Road" Strategic Research Institute, the Capital Culture and Tourism Development Research Institute, the Capital Foreign Cultural Communication Research Institute, the Capital International Exchange Center Research Institute, the China Public Policy Translation Research Institute, the China Service Trade Research Institute, the Chinese Culture Research Institute, the China Animation and Cultural Innovation Research Institute, the China Ecological Civilization Governance Modernization Research Institute, the China Red Tourism Research Institute, the Chinese Civilization Interpretation and International Communication Research Institute, the China-Arab Culture and Tourism Cooperation Research Center, the Artificial Intelligence and Language Cognition Laboratory, and the Beijing Key Laboratory of "Belt and Road" Data Analysis and Decision Support. Among them, there are 11 provincial and ministerial scientific research bases, 1 provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation center, 1 Ministry of Education Country and Regional Research Cultivation Base, 7 Ministry of Education Registered Country and Regional Research Centers, and host important academic organizations such as the Beijing Translation Association, Beijing Cartoon Society, and Beijing Tourism Society. It edits and publishes academic journals such as "Journal of Beijing International Studies University", "Tourism Guide", "Cross-Cultural Research", and "Arab Studies Collection". The school gives full play to its multilingual advantages, vigorously carries out international exchanges and cooperation, and has a distinct international feature. The school has established all-round, multi-level and substantial exchanges and cooperation with more than 190 universities and educational institutions in more than 50 countries and regions around the world. Every year, a certain number of teachers are selected to study abroad, visit, cooperate in scientific research, and engage in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The average number of students studying abroad each year is more than 500, and the average number of foreign students received each year is more than 1,500. The school has cooperated with the Autonomous University of Chihuahua in Mexico, the University of Central Lancashire in the UK, the University of Mohammed V in Morocco, the City of Clermont-Ferrand in France, the University of Coimbra in Portugal, and the University of Panama to jointly build 6 Confucius Institutes.
