The predecessor of Guizhou Normal University, the National Guiyang Normal College, was founded in 1941 and was one of the eight national normal colleges in China at that time. In 1950, it was renamed "Guiyang Normal College"; in 1954, the Ministry of Education entrusted the Guizhou Provincial People's Government to manage it; in 1985, it was renamed "Guizhou Normal University"; in 1996, it was designated as a provincial key university by the Guizhou Provincial People's Government. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the school has developed steadily in all its undertakings. In 2015, it became a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the Guizhou Provincial People's Government. It has successively won the titles of "National Civilized Unit", "National Civilized Campus", "National Advanced Unit for Mass Sports", "National Advanced Unit for Legal Publicity and Education", etc., and has been approved as a doctoral degree authorization unit and a postdoctoral research mobile station (Chinese Language and Literature, Marxist Theory, Mathematics), and has been selected as the "National First Batch of Demonstration Universities for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform" and the "111 Plan" university of the Ministry of Education/State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. There are currently two campuses, Huaxi and Baiyun, covering an area of more than 2,780 acres. There are 25 colleges and 1 Continuing Education College. There are nearly 34,000 full-time students and 2,623 faculty members, including 816 with doctoral degrees, 337 professors and 651 associate professors, 5 candidates for relevant national talent programs, 1 "Changjiang Scholar" distinguished professor of the Ministry of Education, and 33 experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council. 90 people have won national titles and honorary titles such as National Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions, National "Teaching Masters", and National Excellent Teachers; more than 230 people have won provincial titles and honorary titles such as Guizhou Provincial Core Experts and Provincial Experts. The school has a complete range of disciplines and majors, covering 11 disciplines such as philosophy, literature, education, engineering, and science. There are 8 first-class disciplines in Guizhou Province, 3 first-class disciplines in Guizhou Province, 2 "world-class disciplines (class II)" in Guizhou Province, 1 "class I" in Guizhou Province, 6 first-level disciplines, 24 first-level disciplines, 21 professional master's degree programs. There are 77 undergraduate majors, 56 "Double 10,000 Plan" first-class majors (28 national first-class undergraduate majors, 28 provincial first-class undergraduate majors). 6 national first-class undergraduate courses, 1 national ideological and political demonstration course, 77 provincial "gold courses". The school has rich educational and teaching resources, including 10 national bases such as the National Teacher Training Base, the National University Off-campus Practice Base, the Ministry of Education 111 Talent Introduction Base, and the Chinese National Community Research Base; 9 national scientific research platforms such as the National Engineering Technology Research Center, the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory, and the National University Science and Technology Park; 1 Ministry of Education Science and Technology Innovation Talent Team, 1 of the first Huang Danian-style teacher teams in the country, and 1 National University Ideological and Political Course Master Studio; 39 provincial scientific research platforms such as provincial key laboratories, provincial university humanities and social sciences research bases, provincial engineering laboratories, provincial collaborative innovation centers, and provincial astronomical research and education centers, and 14 provincial science and technology innovation talent teams. The school adheres to open education and has established long-term cooperation and exchange relations with universities and scientific research institutions in many countries such as the United States, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, Belarus, and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. The school is one of the institutions that undertakes the task of training Chinese government scholarship students. It co-organizes the British Higher Education Diploma Program (SQA-AD) with the Scottish Qualifications Authority of the United Kingdom, and co-establishes the International General Education Course (IGEC) for undergraduates with the Ministry of Education’s Overseas Study Service Center. It co-establishes the "Data Science and Big Data Technology" specialty with the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) of India, and co-organizes the Sino-foreign cooperative education project Music with the University of Central Oklahoma in the United States. After more than 80 years of hard work, generations of scholars have taken the revitalization of the country and the nation as their own responsibility, cultivated themselves and studied, and trained more than 300,000 outstanding talents on all fronts. It has gradually developed into a normal university with distinctive characteristics of teacher education and coordinated development of multiple disciplines, and has made positive contributions to promoting the economic and social development of Guizhou.
