North China University of Technology is a provincial key university with engineering and medicine as its main disciplines, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as liberal arts, science, economics, management, law, art, and education. It has doctoral and master's degree graduate education, undergraduate education, and international student education. It is a national "double first-class" university construction university supported by the province and a civilized campus in Hebei Province. The school was founded in 1895, established in 1958, and integrated with medicine in 2010. Engineering and medicine share the same roots, which are in coal and originated from Kailuan. The Western-style coal mining at Kaiping Coal Mine (later Kailuan Coal Mine) opened the curtain of Tangshan's modern industrialization, and became an important motivation for the establishment of the Mining Department of Beiyang Western Learning School in 1895 (later adjusted to the Mining and Metallurgical Engineering Department of Tianjin University) and the Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway Official School (i.e. Tangshan Jiaotong University, now Southwest Jiaotong University) in 1896; in 1926, in order to meet the urgent need for first aid for coal miners, the Kailuan Mining Administration organized the Kailuan Senior Nursing Vocational School. After the major adjustment of higher education structure in the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Hebei Province rebuilt the mining and metallurgy discipline in Tangshan City to meet the urgent needs of industrial development. In 1958, the provincial and municipal governments and the Provincial Coal Administration decided to establish Tangshan Mining and Metallurgy College, which was mainly engaged in mining. Tangshan Railway Institute participated in the preparation and provided support for teachers and management cadres. At the beginning of the school, the school was directly led by the Kailuan Party Committee. In the same year, Kailuan Coal Mine Health School (formerly Kailuan Nursing School) was renamed Kailuan Medical College, and both engineering and medical schools were established in the same year. In 1959, the Mining and Metallurgical Engineering Department of Tianjin University moved to Tangshan Mining and Metallurgy College, which used to use the names of Hebei Tangshan Mining and Metallurgy College, Hebei Mining and Metallurgy College, Tangshan Institute of Engineering and Technology, Hebei Institute of Technology, and Hebei University of Technology. In 1963, Kailuan Coal Mine Health School, Fuxin Coal Mine Health School, and Tangshan Health School Junior College were merged to form Tangshan Coal Mine Medical College, which used to use the names of Hebei Medical College and North China Coal Medical College. In 2010, the former Hebei University of Technology and North China Coal Medical College joined forces to form Hebei United University, which was renamed North China University of Technology in 2015. The school currently has more than 48,240 full-time students, including more than 35,950 undergraduates, more than 5,980 doctoral and master's students, more than 6,000 junior college students, and more than 310 international students. The school has 19 management agencies, 30 teaching institutions, 6 teaching auxiliary institutions and 8 directly affiliated institutions. In August 2016, the school's first-class modern smart campus covering an area of 4,500 acres and a total construction area of 1.0356 million square meters was officially opened. It has first-class voice classrooms, multimedia classrooms, electronic reading rooms, CAD centers, computing centers, audio-visual centers, network centers and other modern teaching facilities and equipment. The library has a construction area of 69,000 square meters, with 3.08 million paper books, 55 Chinese and foreign databases, and a data storage capacity of 96.5TB. The school hosts 5 publicly issued academic journals in natural sciences, medicine, and social sciences, two of which are Chinese science and technology core journals, which have a certain influence at home and abroad. The school has 13 affiliated hospitals and non-affiliated hospitals.
