The University of Electronic Science and Technology of China is located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. It was formerly known as Chengdu Institute of Telecommunications Engineering. In 1956, under the personal deployment of Premier Zhou Enlai, it was composed of Jiaotong University (now Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi'an Jiaotong University), Nanjing Institute of Technology (now Southeast University), It was created by merging the telecommunications engineering-related majors of South China Institute of Technology (now South China University of Technology). The school was listed as a national key institution of higher learning by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1960. In 1961, it was identified as one of the seven national defense industry colleges and universities by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In 1988, it was renamed the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. In 1997, it was identified as one of the first batch of national “211 Project” construction projects. In 2000, it was transferred from the former director of the Ministry of Information Industry to the director of the Ministry of Education.
