Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Engineering is a provincial undergraduate university with advantages in agriculture and engineering, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as agriculture, engineering, science, economics, management, literature, art, and law. The school is located in the historical and cultural city of Guangzhou, with two campuses, Baiyun and Haizhu, covering an area of 1,765 acres. The campus combines the beauty of Maofeng Mountain and the aura of Zhushui River, making it an ideal place for studying and conducting research. The predecessor of the school was the Zhongkai Agricultural and Industrial School, which was proposed by Mr. He Xiangning, a pioneer of the modern democratic revolution, and was decided to be established in 1925 to commemorate the great patriot Mr. Liao Zhongkai's desire to care for farmers and workers. In March 1927, the school officially enrolled students, initially setting up silk and agricultural departments, and Mr. He Xiangning served as the principal. In 1980, the school was identified as a national key secondary vocational school. In 1984, with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, the school was upgraded to an undergraduate college and named "Zhongkai Agricultural and Technical College". Comrade Wang Zhen, Vice President of the State, wrote the name of the school. In January 2006, it obtained the right to confer master's degrees. In March 2008, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed "Zhongkai Agricultural and Engineering College". In 2021, it was approved as a doctoral degree granting project construction unit. The construction and development of the school has received great attention and strong support from leaders at all levels and all sectors of society. Party and state leaders Ye Jianying, Deng Xiaoping, Yang Shangkun, and Wang Zhen have successively inscribed the Liao Zhongkai and He Xiangning Memorial Hall, the Liao Zhongkai bronze statue, the He Xiangning white marble statue, and the Liao Zhongkai Monument on campus; Yang Shangkun, Li Xi, Liao Chengzhi, He Luli, Zhou Tienong, Wan Exiang, Liao Hui, Huo Yingdong, Ma Wanqi, Qi Xuchun, Zheng Jianbang and others have visited the school many times to inspect and guide the work. In April 1987, according to the proposal of Vice President Wang Zhen and with the approval of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, the school board of directors was established. Wang Zhen served as honorary chairman, and Ye Xuanping, then governor of Guangdong Province, served as chairman. The board of directors was composed of national leaders, provincial and ministerial leaders, and celebrities from Hong Kong and Macao. Since then, the chairman of the board of directors of all previous terms has been the then governor of Guangdong Province. People from all walks of life at home and abroad deeply respect and admire Liao Zhongkai, He Xiangning and their pioneering work, and continue to give strong spiritual and material support. A group of social elites in Hong Kong and Macao, including Huo Yingdong, Ma Wanqi, Ho Hau Wah, Chui Sai On, Zeng Xianzi, Ho Hongshen, Yang Zhao, Yang Xun, Liu Yuxin, Huo Zhenhuan, Ma Youli, etc., donated funds to the school to build laboratory buildings, libraries, teaching buildings, etc., to purchase teaching and scientific research and medical and health equipment, and to establish awards and scholarships for teaching, and spared no effort to make the school distinctive and high-level. The school has 22 secondary colleges, 1 postdoctoral research workstation, 1 doctoral workstation and the largest IELTS test center in South China; it has 3 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, 69 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms; 4 provincial key disciplines, 3 provincial "strong characteristics" disciplines, and 3 disciplines ranked in the top 1% of the ESI global ranking; 2 national first-class majors, 13 provincial first-class majors; 9 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 6 master's professional degree authorization categories, and 65 undergraduate majors. The school recruits students from 16 provinces (autonomous regions) across the country, and currently has more than 25,000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students. There are more than 1,700 faculty and staff, including 1,162 full-time teachers, 609 full-time teachers with doctoral degrees, and 429 full-time teachers with senior professional titles; there are 55 talents at or above the provincial level, 1 national outstanding teacher, 4 Guangdong teaching masters, 21 outstanding teachers (educators) in South Guangdong, and 16 provincial science and technology innovation teams. The school has established friendly exchanges, talent training and academic cooperation relations with 29 universities and research institutes (institutes) in the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Poland, Malaysia, Thailand, Belarus, Canada, Italy and other countries. It is the "first batch of agricultural foreign-related training cooperation and exchange points" of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China, and is a member of the "China-Latin America Agricultural Education Science and Technology Innovation Alliance" and the "Belt and Road and BRICS Skill Development International Alliance". In recent years, the school has been successively rated as a model school for rule of law in Guangdong Province, a safe and civilized campus in Guangdong Province, a green school in Guangdong Province, a garden-style unit in Guangzhou City, a pilot unit for the construction of the "three-dimensional education" system and mechanism of Guangdong Province's colleges and universities, an advanced collective in mental health education and counseling work in Guangdong Province's colleges and universities, an outstanding unit for the national summer "three-down-to-the-countryside" social practice activities for college and technical secondary school student volunteers, and a national blood donation contribution gold award unit. It is the initiator of the Guangdong Province Rural Construction University Alliance and the initiator of the Guangdong Province New Agricultural Science Education Alliance.
