Introduction and Overview: Brevard College is a small private liberal arts college in North Carolina, United States, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with a campus covering 120 acres. The college offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Music degrees, more than 40 majors and minors, and has a student population of approximately 780 (fall 2021).

History:

Origins and Mergers: The college originated from three schools in 1853, namely Weaver College, founded by the "Temperance Brothers" in Buncombe County, Rutherford College, founded in Burke County, and Brevard College, founded in 1895 by Asheville businessman Fitch Taylor and his wife Sarah. In 1933, the Western Carolina Annual Conference decided to merge Weaver College and Rutherford College to create a coeducational Methodist junior college on the site of the old Brevard College.

Officially established: In 1934, five Weaver College faculty and 30 students moved to the new campus, and Brevard College was officially established with 24 faculty and 394 students. In 1936-1937, the Public Works Administration built Brevard College's stone walls and gates, and the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

Subsequent development: Under the administration of President Emmett K. McLarty from 1957 to 1968, the college adopted a new emblem and motto "cognosce ut prosis" ("to learn in order to serve"), created the student rights movement, and admitted its first African-American students; became a four-year institution in 1996; and stopped granting associate degrees in 2006.

Established: Its predecessor institution was established in 1853 and officially became Brevard College in 1934.
