History: In 1896, Wingate School, the predecessor of Wingate University, was established by the Baptist Association of Union County, North Carolina and Chesterfield County, South Carolina. In 1923, the school began to offer the first two years of bachelor's degree education and became Wingate Junior College. In 1952, Wingate Junior College was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1977, the school became a four-year institution and was renamed Wingate College. In 1995, Wingate College was officially renamed Wingate University, and has continued to grow and develop since then, adding many graduate and professional courses. In 2007, the school began to separate from the North Carolina Baptist State Convention to gain greater autonomy. In 2009, the school officially became independent from the Baptist State Convention.
