History:
In 1969, the college was established as Johnston County Technical College, with an initial enrollment of 500 students.
In 1971, the school acquired a permanent campus in Smithfield and was renamed Johnston Technical College.
In 1976, a fire destroyed some classroom facilities, but the college remained in the development stage for most of the 1970s, and many buildings for teaching and other purposes were built on the Smithfield campus.
In 1981, the school's enrollment had grown to 2,500 students.
In 1995, the college received a donation of a wildlife sanctuary.
Educational philosophy: Committed to supporting students and helping them succeed, focusing on cultivating students' critical thinking skills and allowing students to learn throughout their lives.

Accreditation: It is a member of the North Carolina Community College System and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities to award certificates, diplomas and associate degrees.
Curriculum: It offers more than 65 associate degree and certificate programs covering a variety of fields such as liberal arts, health professions, business/marketing, public safety, etc.
Featured Programs: It has the oldest truck driver training program in the United States - North Carolina Truck Driver Training School.

Campus Size: The main campus covers 175 acres and has 11 student buildings.
Facilities and Equipment: It has a 1,011-person auditorium, a 4,800-square-foot multi-purpose/banquet hall, 4 vocational workshops/laboratories, a 16-acre botanical garden, and 3 ponds. The school also built a new $8.3 million, 11,000-square-foot library with more computers, study spaces, and remote learning classrooms. In addition, the school's Howell Forest Environmental Learning Center is a 2,800-acre wildlife sanctuary that provides many educational and recreational opportunities for students.
