History:
Early Founding: In 1891, with the efforts of several Lutheran pastors, it was established on 56 acres of land provided by Hickory businessman Colonel J.G. Hall. It was originally named "Highland College" and was renamed Lenoir College 4 months later to commemorate the land donor Captain Walter Lenoir. In the first year, 149 students and 8 teachers took classes in a simple two-story frame structure building that was originally used as a private college.
Development history: In 1892, the college moved into a new brick main building, which carried the academic, administrative, social and religious life of the campus until it was destroyed by fire in 1927; in 1928, the school received initial accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC); the school continued to develop, adding more majors and courses, expanding the campus, and establishing campuses and teaching sites in multiple regions.
