History:
The school was founded in 1909 and was originally called East Central State Normal School. It was established to train teachers for Oklahoma. At that time, the school offered four years of "preparatory" (equivalent to high school) learning, followed by a two-year teacher certification course.
In 1939, the school was renamed East Central State College. In 1974, it was changed to East Central Oklahoma State University, and finally named East Central University in 1985.
