In the late 1950s, local community members began to explore the establishment of a community college. In 1961, college courses were first offered in rented venues.
In 1964, after a series of preparations and votes, the college was officially established and the first board of directors was elected. The campus land was donated by Elton and Ruth Jackson, and funds were subsequently raised through various means for construction.
