Founded on December 12, 1870, by the Northern Baptist Church, it was originally a normal college. Located in Columbia, South Carolina, it was built on 110 acres (about 45 hectares) of former plantation land. Bathsheba A. Benedict of Rhode Island provided $13,000 on behalf of the American Baptist Home Missionary Society to purchase the land.
