Southern Medical University, formerly known as the First Military Medical University of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, was founded in 1951. It was designated as a national key university in 1979. In August 2004, it was transferred to Guangdong Province as a whole and renamed Southern Medical University. It currently has two campuses in Guangzhou and Shunde. The school is the only medical school among the first five provincial high-level universities in Guangdong Province, the first batch of medical universities jointly built by the Ministry of Province, one of the first eight universities in the country to offer an eight-year clinical medicine major (undergraduate and doctoral degree), and the first batch of pilot universities for the education and training program of excellent doctors and excellent doctors (traditional Chinese medicine). The school has been selected in the top 500 of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for three consecutive years and will be among the top 400 in the world in 2023. Discipline construction: It has 5 national key and cultivation disciplines, 6 key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 10 key disciplines of Guangdong Province; 14 disciplines are among the top 1% of ESI in the world, including clinical medicine in the top 0.5‰ in the world, pharmacology and toxicology in the top 1‰ in the world, and the overall ESI ranking ranks 46th in the country. There are 10 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 15 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 2 doctoral professional degree authorization points, 15 master's professional degree authorization points, and 10 postdoctoral research mobile stations, forming a discipline system with medicine as the main focus and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as science, engineering, law, management, and education. Education and teaching: The school is the only independent medical school that offers eight-year medical education, and the "Basic Medicine Outstanding Student Training Base" has been selected as the National Basic Discipline Outstanding Student Training Program 2.0 Base. It has become a university in the "101 Plan" of the Ministry of Education, and basic medicine and clinical medicine have been selected into the "101 Plan". As the first completing unit, it has won 12 national teaching achievement awards and 49 provincial teaching achievement awards, including 2 national first prizes for teaching achievements. There are currently 7 national characteristic majors, 16 Guangdong characteristic majors, and 6 Guangdong famous majors. It has been approved to build 23 national first-class undergraduate majors and 40 national first-class undergraduate courses, and the number of selected courses ranks first among medical schools in the country. There are 17 national-level planned textbooks, 17 national-level quality courses, 2 national-level curriculum ideological and political demonstration courses (famous teachers and teams), 4 national-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 first-time national excellent textbook construction awards, 1 first-time national clinical teaching and training demonstration center, and selected as the independent pilot unit for the construction of the "one-stop" student community comprehensive management model of the Ministry of Education. 1 national-level graduate training demonstration base and 25 Guangdong joint training graduate demonstration bases have been built. In recent years, many academicians of the two academies have emerged among the graduates, including Hou Fanfan, Xia Zhaofan, Gao Tianming, and Liu Chao. In the national practicing physician qualification examination, the highest pass rate of clinical medicine ranked fourth in the country, and Chinese medicine ranked first in the country three times. The results of the "Internet +" and "Challenge Cup" series of competitions are firmly in the top two of the national medical colleges and universities, and a total of 48 national awards have been won, including 1 special prize, 4 first prizes, and 12 gold prizes in the national competition. Faculty: There are 353 people selected for national talent projects and 373 people selected for provincial talent projects, including: 4 academicians of the two academies, 12 dual-appointed academicians, 3 national teaching teams, 2 Huang Danian-style teacher teams in national universities, 6 national teaching masters, 31 national overseas high-level talents, 38 Yangtze River Scholars, 31 national "outstanding young talents", 29 national special support plans (10 young top talents), 24 national candidates for the "Million Talent Project", 10 young and middle-aged scientific and technological innovation leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and 27 national "outstanding young talents". Scientific research: There are 116 national and provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms such as the National Key Laboratory, the National Clinical Medicine Research Center, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Brain and Brain-like Research Center, 2 innovation teams in key areas of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 2 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, and 1 innovation research group of the National Natural Science Foundation. A total of 29 national science and technology awards and 55 provincial and ministerial first prizes have been won, and the number of national science and technology awards ranks first among Guangdong universities. In 2023, it won 442 National Natural Science Foundation projects, ranking 16th among universities nationwide, first among independent medical schools nationwide, and second among universities in Guangdong Province, and has been among the top 30 in the country for eight consecutive years. The number of national fund projects of the affiliated Southern Hospital has ranked among the top 10 medical institutions nationwide for three consecutive years, with the best result being third among medical institutions nationwide and first among medical institutions in Guangdong Province. In 2023, it won 115 China Postdoctoral Science Foundation projects, ranking 13th among universities nationwide and first among independent medical schools. The Journal of Southern Medical University was selected into the echelon journal project of the "China Science and Technology Journal Excellence Action Plan" and won the title of "One Hundred Outstanding Chinese Academic Journals". Medical strength: There are 15 affiliated hospitals, including 11 Class A tertiary hospitals, with about 22,000 beds and about 22 million annual diagnosis and treatment services. It has 43 national key clinical specialties (including traditional Chinese medicine), 112 Guangdong key clinical specialties (including traditional Chinese medicine), and 23 Guangdong Provincial Medical Quality Control Centers. Nanfang Hospital, the affiliated Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, Zhujiang Hospital, and the 10th Affiliated Hospital (Dongguan People's Hospital) have entered the ranks of high-level hospitals in Guangdong Province, and 6 affiliated hospitals have been awarded A or above in the national public hospital performance assessment. Nanfang Hospital took the lead in building the National Trauma Regional Medical Center and the National Regional Traditional Chinese Medicine (Rheumatology) Diagnosis and Treatment Center, and was selected as a construction unit for the National Emergency Medical Rescue Base, the National Difficult Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Capacity Improvement Project, and the Chinese and Western Medicine Collaborative "Flagship" Hospital Pilot Project. The affiliated Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital took the lead in building the National Cardiovascular Regional Medical Center.
