School History

East Tennessee State University was founded on October 2, 1911. Its predecessor was the East Tennessee State Normal School. In 1925, it was renamed East Tennessee State Normal College. In 1930, it was renamed Johnson City State Normal College. In 1943, it was renamed East Tennessee State College. In 1963, it was officially renamed East Tennessee State University.
