Xianyang Normal University is a provincial undergraduate college with teacher education as its feature. The school originated from the "Xianyang Special Training Department of Shaanxi Normal University" in May 1978. In December 1978, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the "Xianyang Normal College" was established. In May 2001, it merged with Xianyang Education College to form Xianyang Normal University. In October 2004, the Xianyang Branch of Shaanxi Radio and Television University was incorporated. In July 2016, Shaanxi Mechanical and Electrical Engineering School was transferred to the school. The school is located in Xianyang, the ancient capital of the Qin Dynasty and a national historical and cultural city. It has two campuses, Weicheng and Qindu. The campus covers an area of more than 800 acres, with an internship and training base of 2,650 acres and a school building area of more than 500,000 square meters. The school recruits students from 28 provinces (municipalities) and autonomous regions across the country, and currently has more than 18,000 full-time students and international students. The school currently has 17 secondary colleges, 33 research institutes, 53 undergraduate majors (28 teacher-training majors and 25 non-teacher-training majors), covering 9 disciplines including literature, science, history, law, education, management, engineering, economics, and art. In 2017, the school was identified as a project construction unit for the proposed new master's degree awarding unit, and in 2018 it was approved as a construction unit of "Shaanxi Province's First-Class Applied Undergraduate Colleges", and in 2019 it was approved for the National Sports and Aesthetic Education Immersion Action Plan. The school currently has 1 national-level professional comprehensive reform pilot project, 2 national-level first-class majors, 1 national-level curriculum ideological and political demonstration project, 14 provincial-level first-class majors, 8 provincial-level famous majors and characteristic majors, 4 provincial-level professional comprehensive reform pilot projects, and 52 provincial-level teaching reform projects, provincial-level teaching achievement awards, and provincial-level excellent teaching materials awards. There are 26 provincial-level quality resource sharing courses, 15 provincial-level first-class undergraduate courses, 7 provincial-level ideological and political demonstration courses, provincial-level innovation and entrepreneurship education courses, provincial-level teacher education online open courses, provincial-level quality online open courses, 6 provincial-level teaching teams, 9 provincial-level new engineering research and practice projects, provincial-level new liberal arts research and practice projects, "1+X" certificate pilot college projects, 6 provincial-level college students' off-campus innovation and entrepreneurship practice education bases, provincial-level talent training model innovation experimental zones, 11 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, provincial-level college students' off-campus practice education bases, 461 provincial-level college students' innovation and entrepreneurship training program projects, and more than 2,000 provincial-level and above discipline competition awards. The school currently has more than 1,300 faculty and staff, more than 400 of whom have senior titles such as professors and associate professors, and more than 90% of them have doctors and masters. Among the teachers, there are 3 people who enjoy special allowances from the State Council, more than 50 people are "young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in Shaanxi Province", "Sanqin talents", young and middle-aged science and technology innovation leaders, science and technology award review experts, social science association experts, etc., 3 national outstanding teachers and advanced teachers, 28 provincial outstanding teachers, teaching masters, and model teachers, 8 cross-century academic and technical leaders, top scientific and technological talents, experts with outstanding contributions, and three-five talents in Xianyang City. In recent years, the school has undertaken 49 national scientific research projects and 436 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects; won 22 provincial and ministerial scientific research awards and 120 departmental and bureau-level scientific research awards. Faculty and staff have published more than 5,400 papers in domestic and foreign academic journals, including more than 900 core journals, and more than 300 papers have been included in SCI, EI, etc. Chinese history (historical geography) is a provincial advantage discipline, and the "Guanzhong Ancient Mausoleum Culture Research Center" and "Shaanxi Rural Basic Education Development Research Center" are Shaanxi (college) key research bases for philosophy and social sciences. It has the Shaanxi Provincial Social Science Popularization Base, the Shaanxi Wu Mi Research Association, the Shaanxi Liu Guyu Research Association, the Xianyang City and Yangling Demonstration Zone Teacher Education Center, the Xianyang City Cadre Education and Training Base, the Xianyang Development Research Institute, and the Jingyang Fu Tea Culture Research and Communication Center. The school library has a rich collection, with more than 1.9 million paper books and 10,033 special documents. The Journal of Xianyang Normal University was founded in 1986 and has won the "National Excellent Journal of Social Sciences in Colleges and Universities", the "Excellent Journal of Social Sciences in Colleges and Universities in Shaanxi Province", the "Excellent Science and Technology Journal Award", and the "Excellent Editing and Publishing Award". Among them, the "Qin and Han Literature and History Research" column has won the National and Shaanxi Provincial Excellent Column Award for Social Science Journals of Colleges and Universities. Editing and publishing "Qin and Han Studies", Qin and Han cultural research has a certain influence in the country. The school adheres to the principle of open education and has established friendly cooperative relations with more than 100 universities and scientific research institutions in 27 countries including the United States, Germany, Australia, South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong and Taiwan. More than 1,000 teachers and students have been driven by the "project" to serve as Chinese volunteers in the Philippines and Thailand, teach in kindergartens in Singapore, and go to South Korea for exchanges and study tours. They have also studied in the United States and South Korea in the form of "2+2" and "3+1" to pursue double degrees and master's and doctoral degrees. More than 100 foreign teachers from 10 countries have been hired to teach at the school, and hundreds of international students have been trained. Over the past 40 years since its establishment, the school has fully implemented the Party's education policy, adhered to the fundamental principle of moral education, and has provided more than 110,000 senior applied talents to the society. A large number of graduates have become the backbone of government management departments, enterprises, institutions, colleges and universities, and scientific research institutes. The school has successively won the titles of "National Advanced Collective in Language and Writing Work", "National Advanced Collective in Social Practice", "National Demonstration School for Standardization of Language and Writing", "Civilized Campus" in Shaanxi Province, "Garden-style Unit" in Shaanxi Province, "Demonstration School for Rule of Law in Schools" in Shaanxi Province, "Advanced Grassroots Party Committee" in the Education System of Shaanxi Province, "Advanced School-level Party Committee of Shaanxi Universities", and "Safe Campus" in Shaanxi Province. In 2021, it was approved as a reserve college for high-quality normal colleges in the "14th Five-Year Plan" Education Power Promotion Project. In April 2022, it was selected as a participating university in the Ministry of Education's collaborative quality improvement plan for teacher education, and in May it was selected as a cooperative assistance unit in Jiangsu and Shaanxi.
