The college was authorized by the Washington State Board of Education in 1961, and the first regular evening classes began on September 12, 1962, at Moses Lake High School. The opening of the permanent facility was delayed due to a steelworkers' strike. In late 1963, the college opened classes in a new facility not far southeast of Moses Lake. In 1966, the college acquired 159 acres (0.64 km2) of land from the federal government at no charge at the former Larsen Air Force Base, which was designated as the college's North Campus, while some courses remained at the original South Campus. In 1975, the North Campus absorbed all courses and programs. In 1967, the Community College Act of the Washington State Legislature designated Big Bend Community College as the 18th District of the state's community college system.
