History
The school was founded in Barboursville, West Virginia in 1888. It was then called Barboursville Theological Seminary and was affiliated with the Southern Methodist Episcopal Church.
In 1901, the school paid off its debts and was renamed Morris Harvey College due to a huge donation from Morris Harvey, a coal operator in Fayetteville.
In 1935, at the invitation of the Charleston Education Center, the school moved to downtown Charleston, and in 1942 it was separated from its religious name and became an independent institution.
In 1947, the school moved to its current location, on the south bank of the Kanawha River.
On December 13, 1978, Morris Harvey College was officially renamed the University of Charleston.
