The school was founded in 1960. Its predecessor was the Kunming School of Traditional Chinese Medicine Continuing Education, which was established in 1953. In 1960, Yunnan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was officially established. In 1986, it was granted the right to confer master's degrees. In 2016, it became a university jointly established by the Yunnan Provincial People's Government and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2018, it became a doctoral degree-granting institution. In the same year, it was renamed Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a national clinical research base for traditional Chinese medicine, a national export base for traditional Chinese medicine services, a national international cooperation base for traditional Chinese medicine, a cultivation unit for the national traditional Chinese medicine inheritance and innovation center, a national demonstration center for clinical teaching and training of traditional Chinese medicine, and a national drug clinical trial institution. At present, it has developed into a comprehensive traditional Chinese medicine college with traditional Chinese medicine as the main body, ethnic medicine as the feature, undergraduate education as the foundation, the scale of postgraduate education is constantly expanding, continuing education and foreign education are showing a good trend, and the coordinated development of medicine, science, engineering, and management. The school currently has two campuses, Chenggong and Baita, with a total area of 778.78 acres and a total construction area of 355,563.65 square meters. There are 11 colleges and 2 public teaching departments: there are more than 140 practical teaching bases, including 2 directly affiliated hospitals and 13 non-directly affiliated hospitals; a clinical practice teaching base alliance and the Yunnan Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Medical Group, which integrates 135 traditional Chinese medicine hospitals and related units in the province, have been established: there are more than 1.1 million paper books, 4.853 million electronic books, and 18,000 ancient books. Over the past 64 years, the school has trained more than 92,000 TCM professionals for border areas, and alumni are spread across 16 prefectures and cities in Yunnan Province, 129 counties and districts, and nearly 60% of graduates work in primary medical and health institutions. A large number of outstanding alumni have emerged, including Zhu Zhaoyun, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Zhu Miansheng, a TCM expert in France and the founder of Space-Time Acupuncture, and Ning Yagong, a "national medical teacher" of TCM in the whole army. More than 80% of the famous TCM doctors, honorary TCM doctors, and grassroots TCM doctors in the province, and more than 50% of the heads of county-level TCM medical institutions in the province are graduates of the school. The school currently has more than 16,000 full-time students, including 13,378 undergraduates, 2,434 postgraduates (including 2 from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), 47 doctoral students (including 1 from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), 163 international students, and 5 students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. There are 842 full-time faculty and staff, including 268 doctors, accounting for 31.83%, and 450 masters, accounting for 53.44%. The academic qualifications, academic backgrounds, and professional titles are reasonable. 417 people have been selected for talent training support plans at the provincial and ministerial levels or above, and 118 well-known professors and experts at home and abroad have been hired as honorary presidents, visiting professors, and honorary professors. There are 25 undergraduate majors, including 4 national first-class professional construction sites, 2 characteristic majors, 1 comprehensive reform pilot major, 12 provincial first-class professional construction sites, 5 characteristic majors, and 3 comprehensive reform pilot majors: there are 5 national first-class undergraduate courses, 25 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 3 provincial Huang Danian-style teacher teams, and more than 200 quality engineering projects above the provincial level. There are 5 high-level Chinese medicine disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and 3 provincial first-class discipline construction projects. There is 1 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization point, 4 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 5 master's professional degree authorization points. It is the first to open a precedent for undergraduate education in Dai medicine in my country and build the only talent training system for undergraduate, master and doctoral students in Dai medicine in the country. The school focuses on three major scientific research clusters: ethnic medicine, southern Yunnan medicine, and southern medicine research. The total area of scientific research laboratories is 17,574.8m, and the total value of equipment is 132 million yuan. It has 22 national and provincial scientific research platforms, including 1 National TCM Clinical Research Base, 2 TCM Research Level 3 Laboratories of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 3 provincial key laboratories, 4 engineering (technology) research centers, 1 TCM Clinical Evaluation Research Center, 2 public science and technology service platforms, 2 provincial new R&D institutions, 3 provincial collaborative innovation centers, 1 provincial philosophy and social science research base, 1 provincial technology transfer demonstration institution, 1 provincial international joint innovation platform, and 1 provincial international science and technology cooperation base. There are 3 Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Missions. It has 8 provincial innovation teams and 23 provincial academician expert workstations and sites. It has 24 provincial key laboratories and engineering centers, and 17 provincial science and technology innovation teams. It promotes cooperation between schools and governments, schools, local governments, and schools and enterprises, and creates four major platforms of "third-party testing of health products and cosmetics, clinical pharmacology evaluation research, health product research and development, and TCM intellectual property strategic operation center", and initially builds the "Cloud Creation" and "Cloud Manufacturing" health series brands. Scientific research projects and scientific research funds are increasing year by year, and the number of scientific and technological achievements awards is steadily increasing. In the past three years (2021-2023), the School of Chinese Medicine, as the first unit, has won 8 provincial scientific research achievement awards, including 2 first prizes and 2 second prizes of Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, and 1 first prize of China Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Award. The school actively serves the local social and economic development, deepens the cooperation between the school, the local government, the school and the enterprise, and signs strategic cooperation agreements with 37 state and municipal governments, research institutes, universities, enterprises and other units. There are 2 directly affiliated hospitals and 13 non-directly affiliated hospitals. The medical service capacity of the two directly affiliated hospitals is constantly improving, and the satisfaction of the people is constantly improving. In the performance assessment of the national tertiary public hospitals in 2023, the First Affiliated Hospital ranked 16th among the 568 comprehensive traditional Chinese medicine hospitals in the country, and won the national "A+" for 5 consecutive years; the Second Affiliated Hospital ranked 52nd among the national hospitals of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, and the grade jumped to "B". We have made every effort to help Gongshan County to fight poverty and have been rated as "Yunnan Province's Advanced Unit for Poverty Alleviation". Give full play to the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment and control of the epidemic, select medical staff to Wuhan and Shanghai to participate in the epidemic prevention and control work, and successfully complete the treatment task with "zero infection". The "Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Education Foundation" was approved by the Provincial Department of Civil Affairs to be established and carry out related work. Set up a youth volunteer service team, carry out social volunteer services, actively participate in drug control and AIDS prevention propaganda and free three donations, continue to carry out the "Sailing Plan" and "Return to Hometown" social practices, and contribute youthful strength to the society through policy propaganda, education care, and loving medical care. The school adheres to the school motto of "respecting virtue and harmony, erudition and practice", and all teachers and students of the school are determined and united, rooted in the red soil, and based on the frontier, with the goal of cultivating high-quality traditional Chinese medicine talents who "respect virtue and be kind, erudition and refinement, practice and practice, and harmony and far-reaching". Focus on cultural education, enhance cultural confidence in traditional Chinese medicine, carry out thematic practical education such as reading and reciting classics, and form an educational and teaching concept and talent training model that emphasizes "theory and practice, science and humanities, knowledge and ethics". The school adheres to the principle of being student-centered, taking education and teaching as the main business, taking the foundation as the foundation, comprehensively deepening reforms, strengthening connotation construction, and moving towards the goal of becoming a "double first-class" university. The school has a local mind and a global vision. As early as 1990, it established the "Catalonia-Yunnan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine" on behalf of China and Spain to achieve intergovernmental cooperation in running schools, creating a precedent for overseas education in the field of Chinese medicine in China, and was recorded in the 60-year history of national higher education in traditional Chinese medicine. The "Lancang-Mekong Traditional Medicine College" was established to continuously carry out international traditional medicine talent training for the Lancang-Mekong region. It initiated and continuously hosted 10 "Greater Mekong Sub-region Traditional Medicine Forums", 3 "Lancang-Mekong Traditional Medicine Academic Exchange Conferences" and 2 "Tengchong Scientists Forum Sub-Forum and Lancang-Mekong Science and Technology Humanities Exchange Forum", becoming the most influential international traditional medicine education exchange and cooperation platform in South Asia and Southeast Asia. It has been approved as two national overseas Chinese medicine centers, "China-Myanmar" and "China-Laos". It has the world's only Museum of Western Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Confucius Institute Headquarters International (Western) Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Promotion Research Base, and has held 10 consecutive International Forums on Western Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine, and has taken the lead in establishing the World Federation of Chinese Medicine's Professional Committee on Anthropology of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has built a collaborative innovation center for southern medicine, led international joint scientific research, and established the World Institute of Traditional Medicine, the Academic Committee for Cooperation and Exchange of Traditional Medicine in the Greater Mekong Subregion, and the Committee for the Protection of Traditional Medicine Knowledge and Medicinal Plants. In this prosperous era, traditional Chinese medicine has ushered in a great opportunity for development with the right time, right place, and right people. The first party congress of Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, held in November 2022, analyzed the current development situation, systematically planned the school's future development goals, and gathered the common will of all teachers and students in the school to form a "1221" strategic deployment: take a distinctive development path, implement the two major strategies of academic development and talent development, and create a new situation of unity and struggle around the two goals of "comprehensively improving the contribution to Yunnan's economic and social development and entering the advanced ranks of higher traditional Chinese medicine colleges in the west".
