Historical background

1663: Founded by François de Montmorency-Laval, the first bishop of New France, it was originally named the Institut Québec.

1852: Queen Victoria issued a royal charter, officially named Université Laval.

1878: A branch was established in Montreal, which later became independent as the current University of Montreal.

1920: After the separation of the Montreal branch, Laval University continued to develop in Quebec City and gradually expanded its academic scope and influence.
