History and Origin
The history of Indira Gandhi University of Technology and Medical Sciences (IGTAMSU) dates back to 2002 when Dr. Priya Ranjan Trivedi, the great institution builder and thinker and the Chairperson of World Institution Building Programme (WIBP), was inspired and encouraged by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to establish a state-level university in Arunachal Pradesh to cater to the higher education needs of the North Eastern States, especially Arunachal Pradesh.
Establishment and Legislation
Although the initial development work had been initiated as early as 2002 when the then Governor and Chief Minister formally invited Dr. Priya Ranjan Trivedi, the Chairperson of WIBP, to select the site and propose a draft bill for passage in the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly, it took nearly a decade for the bill titled “Indira Gandhi University of Technology and Medical Sciences Bill, 2012” (Act 6 of 2012) to be passed in the State Assembly. Since then, the college has offered courses at different levels such as Certificate, Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Bachelor and Master in the fields of Nursing, Law, Paramedical Sciences, Management, Engineering, Information Technology, Education, Social Sciences, Applied Sciences.
The university was created under the provisions of the Indira Gandhi University of Technology and Medical Sciences Act, 2012 (Act 6 of 2012) by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. The School of Nursing set up by the university is also recognized by the Nursing Council of India.
