School status: It is the largest and most prestigious university in Cape Verde and the only public university in the country.

Campus distribution: The main campus is located in Palmarejo, Praia, and there are also campuses in Mindelo, Asomada and São Jorge dos Orgãos.
History: On November 20, 2006, according to Decree No. 53/2006, the three institutions of the Higher Education Institute in Praia, the Marine Engineering and Science Institute in Mindelo and the National School of Management in Praia merged to form the University of Cape Verde. In 2007, the National Institute of Agricultural Research and Development in São Jorge dos Orgãos was officially incorporated. In 2014, the University of Cape Verde and the Camões Institute in Lisbon, Portugal, jointly established the Eugenio Tavares Portuguese Language Chair to promote Portuguese language teaching and research in Cape Verde.

Campus environment
New campus: The new campus of the University of Cape Verde, built with Chinese assistance, started on July 25, 2017 and was completed on July 20, 2021. The building area is about 29,000 square meters, which can accommodate more than 5,000 teachers and students. It has a library, dormitory, canteen and sports facilities, as well as 61 classrooms, 5 auditoriums that can accommodate 150 people, 8 computer rooms, 8 reading rooms and 34 laboratories.
Overall environment: The campus is located in an urban environment, providing students with convenient living and learning conditions. The infrastructure such as transportation around each campus is also constantly improving.
