Folkwang University of the Arts is the central art education institution in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. History and establishment time

The school was founded in 1927 by the opera director Rudolf Schulz-Dernberg and ballet dance movement designer Kurt Jus. It was originally named "Folkwang School" and focused on multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary education in music, dance and speech. In 1963, Folkwang Academy was upgraded to a comprehensive art university.

Since 1971, electronic music has become an important part of composition education. Since 2008, it has become the only art school in Germany to offer five comprehensive composition courses, covering instrumental composition, electronic composition, composition + visualization, jazz composition, popular composition/creation and other fields.
