The then Bishop of Limburg, Augustin Kilian, was very interested in establishing a university. He initially planned to merge it into the Goethe University of Frankfurt, which was established in 1914, but failed. In the early 1920s, the Jesuits began to look for their own school site. In 1925, they purchased the "Grunelius Villa" and established the "St. George Philosophical Seminary" here on October 25, 1926.
