Introduction

History

In 1806, Düsseldorf was under the jurisdiction of the duchy of Joachim Murat, the brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte. At that time, there were only a few research institutes developed from the 16th to the 18th century. Murat intended to establish a university here.

On December 12, 1811 On 14 July 1900, Napoleon issued an order to establish a university consisting of five faculties in the duchy, but the idea was shelved due to the expedition to Russia.

In 1907, a medical school was established at the same time as the construction of the Düsseldorf City Hospital, which was initially used only for the continuing training of hospital doctors.

In 1919, the medical school briefly started teaching and provided medical training to combatants. In 1923, Prussia and Düsseldorf signed an agreement to restructure the medical school and began to formally train medical students.

After World War II, the medical school was rebuilt. On July 3, 1962, North Rhine-Westphalia took over the medical school from the city of Düsseldorf and decided to convert it into a university in 1965.

On January 1, 1966, the University of Düsseldorf was officially established, and the founding ceremony was held on February 14 of the same year. At that time, in addition to the medical department, there were also joint departments of natural sciences and philosophy.
