Introduction

The University of Siegen is a modern public research-oriented comprehensive university located in Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is famous for its international orientation and emphasis on interdisciplinary research and teaching. Its motto is "Shaping a Humane Future".

Number of students and faculty: In 2017, there were 18,618 students and 2,153 faculty, including 1,380 academic faculty and 773 administrative faculty.

History and establishment time

Siegen's history as an educational and research center can be traced back to the 16th century. In 1536, Count William I of Nassau-Siegen commissioned the Saxon educator and theologian Erasmus Sacerius to establish a Latin school.

In 1853, the Wiesenbau Landscape School was established locally, and later its focus shifted to civil engineering, and in 1962 it was renamed the State School of Civil Engineering.

In 1964, the Siegenland Pedagogical College was established, and in 1965 it became the Siegenland branch of the Westphalia-Lippe Pedagogical University, beginning its transformation into a comprehensive university.

On August 1, 1972, in accordance with the Comprehensive University Development Act, Siegen was established together with the other four comprehensive universities in North Rhine-Westphalia, and the Siegenland Pedagogical College and the Siegen-Gummersbach University of Applied Sciences merged to form the new Siegen University.

In 1980, the Siegen University was renamed the University of Applied Sciences, and on June 1, 1983, the Gummersbach campus was transferred to the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, and on January 1, 2003, the University of Applied Sciences was transferred to the University of Applied Sciences. On the same day, the school was officially named the University of Siegen.
