A Sunday training school for workers was opened in 1828, the "Zwickau Mining School" was established in 1862, and in 1897, engineers Paul Kirchhoff and Leander Hummel cooperated with the local municipal government to establish an engineering school.
1965 In 1989, the School of Mining Engineering and the School of General Engineering merged and obtained the right to confer doctoral degrees.
In 1989, the school merged an economic school in Plauen and a factory engineering and construction school in Glauchau to become a comprehensive technical university.
After the reunification of Germany, the school was transformed into a university of applied sciences and renamed the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau West Saxony.
