Introduction to The Gambia College:

Introduction and Overview

Established: 1978.

Nature of the institution: Public higher education institution.

Student size: More than 11,244 students.

Campus distribution: There are four campuses, located in Banjul, Brikama, Bwiam and Basse.

School structure: There are College of Agriculture, College of Education, College of Nursing and Midwifery, and School of Public Health.

History: Its predecessor can be traced back to the Yam Dam Teachers College established in 1952, which was renamed Yam Dam College in 1955. In 1978, according to the Act of Parliament, several early schools in The Gambia, including Yam Dam College, Gambia School of Nursing and Midwifery, Agricultural School and Public Health School, were merged to form The Gambia College. The new college opened in 1980, closed in March 1981 due to student unrest, and reopened in October 1982. After the passage of the Gambia College Act in 1989, the college expanded in the 1990s.
