Basic introduction

The Catholic University of Madagascar (French: Université Catholique de Madagascar; Malagasy: Oniversite katolika eto madagasikara), referred to as UCM, is the only university in Madagascar related to the Catholic Church. It is located in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar.

History

In 1916, French missionaries established the Antananarivo Grand Seminary.

On February 25, 1960, the Higher School of Theology and Philosophy of Madagascar was established in the seminary and became an affiliated institution of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Naples.

In 1961, the school awarded the first bachelor's degree in theology in the history of Madagascar.

In 1973, it was renamed the Higher School of Theology, and in the same year, it ended its cooperation with the Faculty of Theology of the University of Naples.

In 1997, it was renamed the Catholic School of Madagascar again.

In 2000, it was certified by the government of Madagascar.

In 2011, it was officially renamed the Catholic University of Madagascar.

In 2015, the first doctoral school was opened.

In 2016, the Department of Psychology was established.
