The history of the school can be traced back to the National Higher Mechanical School established in 1919.
After the second department was added in 1929, it was renamed the National Higher Mechanical and Electrical School.
It was supposed to become a university of science and technology in 1940, but it was interrupted by World War II.
In 1945, the school obtained the status of a higher engineering college and was officially renamed Poznan University of Technology in 1955.
