Introduction to the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE):

 

Introduction

UGHE is a university in Rwanda that focuses on health sciences. It is a project of Partners In Health and is committed to cultivating professionals who can address global health inequalities and contribute to global health.

 

Overview

Course settings: Offers a joint degree program of Bachelor of Medicine-Master of Science in Global Health Delivery (MBBS-MGHD), a six-and-a-half-year medical degree program that combines a Bachelor of Medicine with a Master of Science in Global Health; there are also Master of Science in Global Health Delivery (MGHD) programs and executive education certificate programs.

 

Student profile: Students and alumni come from more than 12 countries, reflecting its international characteristics.

 

History and establishment time

In 2013, the Rwandan government and Partners In Health considered establishing a medical school next to Butaro Hospital.

 

In September 2015, UGHE was officially established.

 

In 2016, construction of the first permanent campus began in Butaro.

In 2018, the first phase of the Butaro campus was opened.

In 2019, the campus was officially completed and welcomed the first medical course class in the same year.

School Strength

Faculty: It has a team of local and international faculty who are experts in global health delivery, strategic problem solving, monitoring and evaluation, quality improvement, leadership and management, and implementation science.

Partners: Cooperate with the Cummings Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Harvard Medical School, Tufts University, and the Government of Rwanda.

International Recognition: It is praised by UNESCO as a high-quality health science institution and a model of equitable global health education.

Educational Philosophy

By combining a focus on human rights and social justice with rigorous, community-based medical education, it trains future clinicians, health care professionals, and healthcare leaders to treat healthcare as a human right for all, regardless of wealth or geographic location, and is committed to eliminating inequalities in global healthcare.

Key Disciplines

Global Health Delivery: Focuses on cultivating students' ability to improve health services and delivery systems worldwide, involving knowledge in health policy, project management, health economics and other aspects.

Medicine: Including clinical medicine disciplines such as internal medicine, surgery, and pediatrics, focusing on the combination of practice and theory, and cultivating students' clinical diagnosis and treatment capabilities.

Department

There is no clear division of departments, but from the perspective of courses and majors, there are medical-related departments and global health departments.

Ranked 4th in the Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan African University Rankings.

Expenses

100% of the school's students can receive need-based and performance-based scholarships, and the funds come from charitable donations. Specific tuition and other cost information has not yet been clarified.

Campus Environment

Butaro Campus: Located in Butaro in northern Rwanda, it covers an area of ​​250 acres and has classrooms, teaching laboratories, clinical simulation centers, information sharing spaces, and administrative, dining and accommodation facilities.

Kigali Campus: Located in Masaka, Kigali, in the heart of the planned “Medical City”, the campus will provide educational opportunities for students using existing clinical facilities such as Kigali’s Masaka Hospital.
