Introduction to the State University of Zanzibar:

School Profile: The State University of Zanzibar is the highest institution of learning in Zanzibar and the first comprehensive university in the area. It has trained a large number of professionals for Zanzibar and surrounding areas, and plays an important role in promoting local education, culture and socio-economic development.

Basic Overview

Established in 1999 by Act No. 8 of the House of Representatives of Zanzibar and started operations in September 2001.

Geographical Location: Located on Unguja Island in Zanzibar, Tanzania, the main campus is in Tunguu, and there are branch campuses in Beit el-Ras, Vuga and other places.

Faculty: About 230 academic staff.

History: After being established by law in 1999, it was amended by Act No. 11 in 2009 and Act No. 7 in 2016. The 2016 amendment merged higher education institutions such as Zanzibar Institute of Finance and Management, Institute of Health Sciences and Zanzibar Institute of Tourism Development.
