Nanjing University is an institution of higher learning with a long history and an outstanding reputation. Its predecessor was the Sanjiang Normal School founded in 1902. After that, it went through the Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, National Central University, National Nanjing University and other historical periods. It was renamed Nanjing University in 1950. In 1952, during the adjustment of colleges and departments of colleges and universities across the country, Nanjing University adjusted out some colleges and departments such as engineering, agriculture, and normal education, and merged with the liberal arts and science colleges of Jinling University founded in 1888, and still named Nanjing University. The school site was moved from Sipailou to the original site of Jinling University in Gulou.
