Yangzhou University is located in Yangzhou, one of the first batch of national historical and cultural cities. It is a university jointly built by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province and the Ministry of Education, a university jointly built by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, a key comprehensive university under Jiangsu Province, and a Class A university under the Jiangsu High-level University Construction Peak Plan. It is one of the first batch of doctoral and master's degree awarding institutions in the country, and the first university in the country to merge and run schools. The predecessor of the school was Tongzhou Normal School and Tonghai Agricultural School founded by Mr. Zhang Jian, a famous modern industrialist and educator in 1902. During the adjustment of colleges and departments across the country in 1952, its agricultural science and the literary and history special training department moved west to Yangzhou to form Subei Agricultural College and Subei Normal College; the other four colleges were also established or moved to Yangzhou in the same period. In 1992, the school was formed by the merger of six universities including Yangzhou Normal College, Jiangsu Agricultural College, Yangzhou Institute of Technology, Yangzhou Medical College, Jiangsu Water Conservancy Engineering College, and Jiangsu Commercial College. The school has a complete range of disciplines, covering 13 major disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, art, and interdisciplinary disciplines. There are more than 31,900 full-time undergraduate students and more than 16,200 doctoral and master's students in the school. There are 21 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 50 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 3 doctoral professional degree categories, 34 master's professional degree categories, and 22 postdoctoral mobile stations; it has 2 national key disciplines, 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, 10 provincial advantageous disciplines, 10 provincial first-level key disciplines in the "14th Five-Year Plan", and agricultural science disciplines have entered the top 1‰ of the ESI global ranking. Chemistry, plant and animal sciences, engineering, agricultural sciences, clinical medicine, materials science, computer science, biology and biochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, environmental ecology, microbiology, molecular biology and genetics and other 12 disciplines have entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. The school's talent training capacity continues to improve. There are 41 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 6 national characteristic majors, 6 first-phase projects and 41 second-phase projects of Jiangsu University Brand Professional Construction Project, 1 of the first batch of national modern industrial colleges, 2 national talent training model innovation experimental zones, 38 provincial excellent graduate workstations, 8 excellent talent training projects of the Ministry of Education, and 28 majors have passed the certification and evaluation of engineering education, clinical medicine and teacher education. It has 39 national first-class undergraduate courses, 14 national quality courses, 13 national quality resource sharing courses, 2 Ministry of Education quality video open courses, 1 national bilingual teaching demonstration course, 5 national quality online open courses, 3 national teaching teams, 2 Ministry of Education and Ministry of Agriculture agricultural science and education cooperation talent training bases, 1 national off-campus practical teaching base, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 5 national demonstration virtual simulation experimental projects, and won 1 first prize and 8 second prizes for national teaching achievements, 6 provincial higher education teaching achievements special prizes and 1 second prize for graduate education achievements of the Chinese Association for Degree and Graduate Education. The school focuses on improving the level of professional construction, implementing the branding construction and improvement project of Yangzhou University's undergraduate majors, vigorously promoting general education reform, deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education, strengthening practice education, actively creating "one college, one product", implementing the second classroom credit system, and promoting the integrated development of the first and second classrooms. The school's hybrid teaching reform cases were included in the UNESCO White Paper on Hybrid Learning. It has 1 international cooperation joint laboratory, 1 national and regional research center of the Ministry of Education (on record), 30 ministerial and provincial key (construction) laboratories, 72 engineering technology research centers, public technology service centers, research institutes (bases), 2 provincial collaborative innovation centers, 1 national technology transfer demonstration institution, and 1 national science and technology commissioner entrepreneurship training base. At present, it undertakes more than 3,800 scientific research projects of various levels and types, with an annual total science and technology funding of more than 1.19 billion yuan. It has won 17 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Award, 3 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Awards, and 2 National Innovation and Pioneering Awards. The recombinant Newcastle disease virus inactivated vaccine (A-VII strain) developed by the institute has obtained a Class I new veterinary drug registration certificate; it has won major (key) projects of the National Social Science Fund for many years, and one achievement has won the first prize of the Sixth Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award (Humanities and Social Sciences) of the Ministry of Education, and one achievement has been selected into the "National Philosophy and Social Sciences Achievement Library".
