History

The origins of the University of Hamburg can be traced back to the Academies Stadium 400 years ago. In the 19th century, Hamburg also developed academic institutions such as the Botanical Garden, the Hamburg Observatory, and the National Chemical Laboratory.

On March 28, 1919, the first parliament elected by the citizens of Hamburg passed a resolution to establish a university, and the University of Hamburg was officially established, integrating the previous general lecture system, the Hamburg Colonial Institute, and the Academic College.

1935 In 1945, the University of Hamburg was renamed Hanseatic University. After the fall of the Nazi government in Germany, Hanseatic University was closed and reopened in November 1945 as the University of Hamburg.

In the mid-1960s, the University of Hamburg expanded the von Mayer Park campus.

In 2005, the Hamburg University of Economics and Political Science was merged into the University of Hamburg, and the University of Hamburg introduced bachelor's and master's degrees.

In February 2014, the number of colleges of the University of Hamburg was reorganized to 8.
