Introduction

The full name of the University of Mainz is Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. It is located in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is a member of the German U15 University Alliance, a key university alliance in Germany. It is also a public research university with a long history and a high reputation.

History and establishment time

The University of Mainz was founded in 1477 by Adolf II von Nassau, the then Archbishop of Mainz, Elector and Imperial Chancellor, but the university was actually founded in 1477. In 1792, the university was officially opened by his successor Dieter von Isenburg. In 1784, the university was opened to Protestants and Jews. After the establishment of the Republic of Mainz in 1792, academic activities gradually stagnated due to war. In 1798, the university became active again under French rule. The medical department taught until 1823, and only the theology department continued to teach in the 19th century. In 1946, the University of Mainz was reopened with the support of the French occupation forces. The original site was the anti-aircraft barracks built after the re-militarization of the Rhineland in 1938 during the Third Reich. These buildings are still in use today.

Expenses
