In 1949, it was renamed Shanghai Municipal Drama College, and in 1951 it was renamed Shanghai Drama College. In 1953, the Drama Department of the Art Department of Shandong University and the Drama Group of Shanghai Xingzhi Art School were merged to form the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Drama (independent school, independent system). In 1956, it was officially renamed Shanghai Theatre Academy, affiliated to the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China, and became a national key art school. Drama educator Xiong Fusi served as the first dean. In 2000, it was put under the management of Shanghai Municipal People's Government and jointly established by Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Ministry of Culture. In 2002, the Performing Arts College of Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai Opera School and Shanghai Dance School were merged, and Shanghai Theatre Academy became a comprehensive art college that includes drama, opera, dance, film and television and other disciplines, and provides education from technical secondary school, undergraduate to master and doctoral graduate education. Drama and Film Studies has ranked first in the country for three consecutive years in the Soft Science China Best Discipline Ranking. At present, the school has formed a "four-center" campus layout and functional positioning, namely - Drama Art Education Center: Huashan Road Campus; Chinese Opera Education Center: Lianhua Road Campus; International Dance Education Center: Hongqiao Road Campus; Film and Television New Media Education Center: Changlin Road Campus. Shanghai Theatre Academy has always adhered to the socialist direction of running schools, firmly grasped the fundamental task of cultivating people with moral integrity, insisted on providing art education that satisfies the people, and never forgot to "produce talents, works, ideas, and models". Adhering to the school motto of "the best and the most beautiful", it has taken the cultivation of "moral and artistic talents with good moral character, solid foundation, professional expertise, and strong practice" as its goal, and consciously assumed the important mission of cultivating cultural and artistic talents, artistic creation, scientific research, social services, cultural inheritance and innovation, and international exchanges and cooperation, actively serving the national and Shanghai development strategies, and committed to building a leading domestic and internationally renowned higher art college. Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, Shanghai Theatre Academy has closely focused on major strategies such as the great development and prosperity of national culture and the construction of Shanghai into a socialist modern international metropolis with global influence, and has formed three major talent training characteristics and advantages in its long-term school-running practice: First, through-train training. It has effectively connected the goal of cultivating artistic talents with the functional layout of the campus, effectively connected the selection, training and export of high-quality artistic talents, effectively connected the chain of artistic talent cultivation and the chain of artistic production, and effectively connected the personalized cultivation of artistic talents with the requirements of comprehensive quality. The second is platform-based education. Based on the construction concept of a high-level art university, we will deepen the comprehensive reform of education, build a unified school platform, a social innovation platform, and a global cultural and artistic platform that are conducive to the cultivation of artistic talents. The third is an international perspective. The UNESCO International Theatre Association Headquarters is stationed in Shanghai Theatre Academy, becoming a high-end platform for international cooperation, exchange and talent training for the school. The World Theatre Research Alliance Conference, the China Theater Development Forum, the AHRC China-UK Creative Industry Exchange Conference, the Shanghai International Small Theater Drama Exhibition, the Shanghai International Art Festival Youth Art Creative Week, the Master's Program in Cross-Cultural Communication, the Winter Academy, the International Director Master Class and other projects have their own characteristics. Over the past 78 years since its establishment, Shanghai Theatre Academy has trained nearly 10,000 art professionals and cultural management talents for the country. A considerable number of them have become famous artists and high-quality professionals in the fields of drama, film, television, dance, and fine arts with influence in China and even internationally. They have won numerous major awards for drama, film, television, fine arts, opera, and dance works, such as the "Five One Project Award", Wenhua Award, Golden Rooster Award, Hundred Flowers Award, Huabiao Award, Feitian Award, Golden Eagle Award, Golden Microphone Award, Golden Lion Award, Magnolia Award, Lotus Award, etc., and enjoy a wide reputation and influence at home and abroad.
