The university was established in 1993 and its roots can be traced back to the three higher education institutions that previously existed in Magdeburg, namely the Technical University, the University of Education and the Medical School. Due to these three predecessor institutions, the school still has three campuses today, namely "Universitätsplatz", "Universitätsklinikum" and "Zschokke Strasse".
