Introduction

The Academy of Performing Arts in Prague is one of the most famous performing arts academies in the Czech Republic and one of the oldest performing arts schools in Europe, focusing on education and research in the fields of music, dance, drama, film, television and multimedia.

History

The academy was established in 1945 by presidential decree and began to enroll students in the winter semester of 1946. Its establishment originated from the joint initiative of a group of artists, writers and professors of the Old Conservatory of Music in Prague during World War II.

The Academy of Film and Television (FAMU) was established in 1946 and is the fifth university-level art school in the world to conduct film education. In the late 1960s, a group of graduates from the school became the backbone of the Czechoslovak New Wave movement.

The Film and Television Academy's majors in film production, directing, and screenwriting have trained many internationally renowned film talents; the Drama Academy's majors in acting, directing, and stage design have provided a large number of professional talents for the Czech and international theater stages; the Music and Dance Academy also has outstanding teaching results in the fields of music performance, composition, and dance performance.
