The university was founded in 1538 and was originally the Debrecen Reformed Church College. It is one of the oldest educational institutions in Hungary. In 1912, the Hungarian Parliament established the Hungarian Royal University based on its academic departments, of which the Theology Department was one of the three components of the university. In 1949, due to the political environment at the time, the Theology Department was separated from the University of Debrecen and became the Debrecen Reformed Theology College, which was funded by the Hungarian Reformed Church. In 1991, the college was renamed the Reformed Theological University of Debrecen and became one of the founding members of the "University Association" in Debrecen. It still maintains close ties with the University of Debrecen.
