The university was founded in 1538 and was originally the Debrecen Reformed Church College. It is one of the oldest educational institutions in Hungary. In 1949, due to the political environment at the time, the Theology Department was separated from the University of Debrecen and became the Debrecen Reformed Theology College, which was funded by the Hungarian Reformed Church.
