Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) is a Sino-foreign cooperative university with independent legal personality jointly run by the world-renowned Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) and Shantou University (STU). It is the only Sino-foreign cooperative university in science and engineering in my country and the Chinese campus of Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. It is located in Shantou City, Guangdong Province. GTIIT was officially established on December 5, 2016 with the approval of the Ministry of Education of China. It started to recruit students in 2017. It is the first Sino-foreign cooperative university with independent legal personality in my country that has introduced high-quality higher education resources from Israel. It is also a representative project of cooperation between my country and Israel in the field of education. Its construction has been highly valued by the two governments, and fully supported by the People's Government of Guangdong Province, the People's Government of Shantou City and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. GTIIT will strive to build itself into a high-level, internationalized university of science and engineering research, comprehensively introduce high-quality educational resources from the world-renowned Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, carry out educational and teaching innovation, and cultivate outstanding engineers and scientific and technological talents with innovative ability, global vision and humanistic qualities. The People's Government of Guangdong Province, the People's Government of Shantou City and the Li Ka Shing Foundation jointly supported the establishment of the school. In 2018, Guangdong Technion was included in the "High-level University Construction Plan" of Guangdong Province, becoming the youngest university selected for the plan. Four disciplines, including materials science and engineering, food science and engineering, chemical engineering and technology, and environmental science and engineering, were also listed as key disciplines for the construction of high-level universities. The teaching language of Guangdong Technion is English. It will eventually set up 10 majors covering three fields of engineering, science and life sciences, with a student population of 5,000. The school awards bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in accordance with the law. Graduates will receive a graduation certificate and degree certificate from Guangdong Technion, as well as a degree certificate from Technion. The current president of the school is Professor Gong Xingao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, chief scientist of the major scientific research program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and a fellow of the American Physical Society. The executive vice president is Professor David Gershoni, an internationally renowned nanophysicist and former director of the Exact Sciences Department of the Israel Science Foundation.
