Basic Introduction
Established on October 8, 2005, it was originally established as Fatima College, and was granted university status in August 2009 and changed to its current name.

History
Fatima College was founded in 2005 by George Biguzi, the Emeritus Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Makeni.
In 2009, it was granted university status and renamed the University of Makeni.
In 2011, it became a founding member of the Sierra Leone Mental Health Alliance.
From 2014 to 2016, it was forced to temporarily close due to the Ebola epidemic.
In 2018, a new campus was opened in Kabala Town, Koinadugu District, and the university application fee was abolished.
In 2019, it became a founding member of the Sierra Leone First Responders Alliance.

Key Laboratory: The Infectious Disease Research Laboratory at the University of Makeni was developed from a temporary genome sequencing facility established by researchers from the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Sanger Institute during the Ebola outbreak to provide training for local scientists and students.
