Introduction: Bahir Dar University is a public research university located in Bahir Dar, the capital of the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Its official slogan is "Wisdom from the Source of the Blue Nile".

History:

In 1963, Bahir Dar Polytechnic was established with technical cooperation between the Soviet government and the Ethiopian Imperial Government.

In 1972, Bahir Dar Teachers College was established by a tripartite agreement between the Ethiopian Imperial Government, UNESCO and the United Nations Development Programme. Its predecessor was the Teaching College, which began actual work in 1973 with the support of the Ministry of Education and Fine Arts.

In 1999, the two institutions merged according to Council of Ministers Regulation No. 60/1999. On May 6, 2000, Bahir Dar University held its inauguration ceremony and was officially established in 2001.
