Yunnan Arts Institute has a long history of running schools. It was founded in 1959. Its predecessor can be traced back to the Cultural Life Department and Normal College of Southwest Associated University in 1938. It is a comprehensive higher art college with distinctive characteristics and a full range of art categories in Southwest my country. It is one of the eight comprehensive general undergraduate higher art colleges in the country. In 2003, it was approved to confer master's degrees, in 2009, it was approved to be a professional degree training unit for Master of Arts (MFA), in 2009, it was approved to be a cultivation and construction unit of Yunnan Province for doctoral degree conferring, and in 2019, it was approved to be a provincial postdoctoral research workstation for art theory. The school has two campuses in Chenggong and Mayuan, covering a total area of more than 930 acres. There are 12 teaching units including the Conservatory of Music, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Academy of Design, the Academy of Drama, the Academy of Dance, the Academy of Film and Television, the Academy of Art Management, the College of Higher Vocational Education and Continuing Education, the Institute of National Arts, the School of Marxism, the Department of Public Teaching, and the Department of Physical Education, and 1 affiliated art school. There are currently 10,990 full-time students. There are 1,088 faculty members (including non-staff dispatched personnel). The school has two authorized categories: academic master and professional master. It originally covered 5 first-level disciplines (art theory, music and dance, drama and film, fine arts, design) and 6 professional fields (music, dance, drama, film, fine arts, art design) in the category of art. In 2022, the Ministry of Education will release a new version of the discipline catalog. The school will be adjusted to 2 first-level disciplines (arts, design) and 5 professional fields (music, dance, drama and film, fine arts and calligraphy, design). There are currently 2 provincial characteristic advantage disciplines (art theory, music and dance), 3 provincial A-level plateau disciplines (music and dance, drama and film, design), 2 provincial first-class characteristic construction disciplines (drama and film, fine arts), of which 1 is a provincial first-class key support construction discipline; 14 of the school’s 26 undergraduate enrollment majors have been recognized as national first-class undergraduate major construction points, and 10 majors have been recognized as provincial first-class undergraduate major construction points. We have carried out the plan of "increasing A and removing D" for undergraduate majors, approved 2 A-level majors and 1 emerging major, and completed the task of "removing D" ahead of schedule. We have won 7 awards for higher education teaching achievements in Yunnan Province in 2022, including 1 special prize, 3 first prizes, and 3 second prizes. There are 6 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms such as Yunnan Collaborative Innovation Center, key laboratories, engineering research centers, and bases, and 15 provincial teaching and research teams. In the more than 60 years of running a school, Yunnan Art Institute has brought together a group of famous art masters at home and abroad, including oil painter and sculptor Liao Xinxue, sculptor and Chinese painter Yuan Xiaocen, translator and vocalist of "Les Miserables" Fang Yu and violinist Li Dan and his wife, representatives of the Yunnan School of Painting Ding Shaoguang and Professor Jiang Tiefeng, etc., who have cultivated generations of outstanding cultural and artistic talents for the society and made due contributions to the prosperity and development of socialist literature and art and the local economic and social development.
