The predecessor of Mianyang City College, Southwest University of Science and Technology City College, was approved by the State Council's education administrative department in 2006 and jointly organized by Southwest University of Science and Technology and Hefei Wanbo Social Affairs Development Group Co., Ltd. It was approved by the State Council's education administrative department in 2006. It was qualified to award undergraduate bachelor's degrees in 2012. In 2021, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to be transferred and renamed Mianyang City College. The school is located in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, the only science and technology city in China. It currently has two campuses in Anzhou and Youxian, with a planned area of 1,200 acres and a built and planned building area of nearly 630,000 square meters. There are more than 23,000 students and a team of high-quality teachers. The school adheres to the school-running philosophy of "people with educational ideals, ideal education, and cultivating people with ideal pursuits", with "serving students' lifelong development" as the center, and continues to promote the "3331" talent training model reform of "three-stage training, relying on three major platforms, building three types of curriculum systems, and completing a characteristic construction", building a new model of three-stage nine-year talent training, and cultivating students to become "idealistic, multi-specialty and multi-skilled" application-oriented talents. The school consists of 4 professional colleges, 1 industrial college (the industrial college consists of a vocational teaching and research office, a lifelong education college, a dual innovation center, a traditional Chinese medicine health care project group, a CFEC project group, a future business project group, and international education), 1 entrepreneurship college, and a Marxism college. It offers a total of 70 undergraduate and junior college majors, covering engineering, economics, management, literature, science, education, art, and sports. There are currently 3 "first-class undergraduate majors" construction sites in Sichuan Province, 13 first-class undergraduate courses, 4 applied demonstration major projects, 2 comprehensive reform majors, 4 key specialty majors in the quality improvement plan, 2 provincial comprehensive reform majors, and 1 provincial private college specialty. Among them, the surveying and mapping engineering major ranks first among similar colleges in Sichuan Province. The school has 2 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 8 provincial ideological and political courses, 2 provincial ideological and political demonstration teaching teams, 14 provincial first-class (special) demonstration majors, 21 provincial first-class (applied) demonstration courses, and 15 industry-university cooperation and collaborative education projects approved by the Ministry of Education. The school continues to deepen the integration of industry and education and school-enterprise cooperation. It has co-built industrial colleges and entrepreneurship colleges with well-known domestic enterprises, opened order classes, and built 120 internship and training bases inside and outside the school. In 2019, the school's "industry-education integration, school-enterprise cooperation" achievements were displayed and exchanged at the annual meeting of the China Private Education Association. In 2020, the school-enterprise cooperation project "Construction of Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering Practice Base Based on BIM Technology" was selected as an excellent case of the "Double Hundred Plan for School-Enterprise Cooperation" of the China Higher Education Expo (HEEC), and a live roadshow and display were held in Changsha. In 2023, the Energy Dynamics Department was approved as a discipline for the Gongga Plan for the "Double First-Class" Construction of Sichuan Province. The school has always adhered to the fundamental task of cultivating people with moral integrity. It is the first private undergraduate university in Sichuan Province to be selected as a pilot for the comprehensive reform of "three-dimensional education" and a demonstration university for party building work in Sichuan universities. It has successively won the "Sichuan Civilized Campus", the provincial advanced unit for targeted poverty alleviation in colleges and universities, the provincial advanced unit for college student conscription, and the "National Excellent Project Management Office" of the Western Plan. It was rated as the most influential independent college of the year by well-known domestic media.
