Wuhan University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education, a key university of the national "985 Project" and "211 Project", and one of the first "double first-class" universities. Wuhan University can be traced back to the Self-Strengthening Academy founded by Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Huguang in the late Qing Dynasty, in 1893.
