Shanghai Donghai Vocational and Technical College is a non-profit, public welfare private university. It was founded in 1993. It is one of the earliest full-time private colleges in Shanghai approved by the Ministry of Education to issue national academic diplomas. It is a Shanghai-level characteristic higher vocational college and a Shanghai-level model private college. In 2018, it became the first private college in Shanghai to obtain a non-profit school license. The school has won honors such as "National Excellent Private Higher Education College" and "Shanghai Huang Yanpei Vocational Education Award-Excellent School Award", and has been successfully shortlisted for the "National General College Competition Evaluation Results (Higher Vocational) TOP300". It is the only private college selected in Shanghai and has won the honorary title of "Shanghai Civilized Unit" for six consecutive years. In 2018, it won the National Vocational Education Teaching Achievement Award, achieving a zero breakthrough for private colleges. In 2023, the school was awarded the honorary title of "5A Grade" and "Shanghai Green School" in the social organization evaluation. It has the Ministry of Education's "Film and Television Creation Based on Mobile Terminals" Production, Teaching and Research Collaboration Base, and two teacher training bases for private colleges and universities, engineering electromechanical and accounting. Students have achieved remarkable results in various competitions at the national and Shanghai levels. In the first China Skills Competition in 2020, students from Donghai College won the gold medal in the "Freight Forwarding" project (first place in the country) and the fifth place in the "Fashion Technology" project in the country, and both entered the national training team for the 46th World Skills Competition. In 2022, the 21st customs major students of the school won the gold medal in the World Skills Competition.
