Shanghai Arts and Crafts Vocational College is the only independent higher vocational college of art and design in Shanghai, the only higher vocational college in Shanghai that undertakes the national education system reform pilot and the only higher vocational college in Shanghai that is selected into the national "double high" construction plan. It was jointly established in 2003 by Shanghai Arts and Crafts School (founded in 1960) and Shanghai Second Light Industry Staff University (founded in 1979). The college takes arts and crafts as its educational foundation and advantages. Over the past 60 years, it has trained more than 30,000 industry talents and a large number of well-known design masters, craft masters, artists and entrepreneurs at home and abroad. The college is the only art and design college among the 100 national exemplary higher vocational colleges; a national advanced unit of vocational education; a training base for Chinese intangible cultural heritage inheritors determined by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism; one of the top 50 universities with typical experience in graduate employment; one of the top 50 universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship; one of the top 50 higher vocational colleges in the country with international influence and education effectiveness; it has been ranked first in Shanghai in the comprehensive competitiveness ranking of higher vocational colleges in the country for five consecutive years, and ranked first in the competitiveness ranking of higher vocational colleges in the arts and sports category for three consecutive years; it is a "first-class higher vocational" construction college in Shanghai. In 2019, the college became the only higher vocational college in Shanghai selected into the "China Characteristic High-level Higher Vocational School and Professional Construction Plan". In 2020, the college, together with East China Normal University, was approved as the training and cultivation base for principals of vocational colleges by the Ministry of Education, and it is the first higher vocational college in Shanghai to be selected. The college conscientiously implements the spirit of Shanghai's comprehensive education reform, aims to build a characteristic higher art college, and is committed to creating a first-class cultural heritage and creative talent education highland with deep Chinese culture, unique Shanghai style, contemporary characteristics and world vision. In recent years, the college has established the "Crafts and Arts +" strategy, and strived to promote the integration of crafts and arts with fashion life, technological innovation, and creative design. It has set up six secondary colleges, including the School of Handicraft Art, the School of Product Design, the School of Urban Design, the School of Digital Art, the WPP School of Visual Arts, and the School of Plastic Arts, covering 27 majors such as crafts and arts design, digital media art design, public art design, product art design, and advertising art design, providing outstanding talents and services for cultural and creative fields closely related to people's lives, such as artistic creation, product design, environmental design, digital entertainment, and cultural media. The college has established a crafts and arts research center to focus on the inheritance and productive protection of intangible cultural heritage. Seizing the opportunity of Shanghai's "four major brands" construction and the development of cultural and creative industries, the college has established the "Shanghai Digital Art Public Training Base" and the "Shanghai Crafts and Arts Public Training Base", etc., bringing together master studios led by "Oriental Scholars Team", international designers, crafts and arts masters, and folk special arts masters, and gradually formed a school-running form with production-oriented training workshops and various studios as the main body. The college continues to explore new ways to cooperate with top international companies in running schools and establish various forms of school-enterprise cooperation education models. The results of the college's education reform project "Connecting with top international companies, innovating school-running mechanisms to cultivate high-end art design professionals" broke the bottleneck of cooperation between higher vocational schools and enterprises, and won the special prize of Shanghai Municipal Teaching Achievement Award and the second prize of National Teaching Achievement Award. College students have won awards in many international and domestic high-level competitions, including the D&AD Competition, one of the four top international creative design competitions, the Hamburg International Animation Competition in Germany, the Times Golden Calf Award, the largest advertising creative award in the Chinese world, and the National College Student Advertising Competition.
