The Central Conservatory of Music was named and established by the State Council of the Central People's Government in 1949. It was formed by the merger of several music education institutions, including the Music Department of Yan'an Lu Xun Academy of Arts established in 1938, the Chongqing National Conservatory of Music established in 1940, the Third Department of Music of North China University established in 1948, and the Music Department of the National Peking Art College established in 1918. It is the first institution of higher learning established after the founding of New China to train senior professional music talents. In 1960, it was designated as a national key university by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In 2000, it was the only art college in the country to be included in the national "211 Project" construction. It is a university directly under the Ministry of Education. In 2017, it was selected as a national "Double First-Class" discipline construction university. At present, there are departments of composition, musicology, conducting, piano, orchestra, folk music, vocal opera, music artificial intelligence and music information technology, music education college, violin making research center, humanities department, affiliated secondary music school, modern distance music education college, continuing education college, Gulangyu piano school and other teaching colleges and departments, and the key research base of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education - the Institute of Musicology and other institutions. As of December 2023, the Central Conservatory of Music has a total of 2,313 full-time students, including 1,474 undergraduates, 642 master's students, and 197 doctoral students. As a national music education, creation, performance and research center, as well as a social music promotion center, the Central Conservatory of Music is a music school that represents the level of professional music education in China, has a complete range of majors, and enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad. The Central Conservatory of Music is a place that music talents at home and abroad yearn for. Over the past 70 years, the school has established a strong teaching and teaching management team.
