The school was founded in 1993 and was included in the national unified enrollment plan with the approval of the Ministry of Education in 2002. It is a non-profit private undergraduate college and the only university in Shanghai that has entered the national undergraduate vocational education pilot program. In December 2019, it was upgraded to an undergraduate program with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In June 2020, Shanghai Zhongqiao Vocational and Technical College was renamed Shanghai Zhongqiao Vocational and Technical University (abbreviated as "Zhongqiao University"), and in May 2022, the school became a bachelor's degree awarding institution. The school's vision is to become China's leading and internationally renowned modern vocational and technical university. Zhongqiao University was approved as a national healthy school and won the titles of "Shanghai May 1st Labor Award", "Shanghai Civilized Unit", and "Shanghai Safe and Civilized Campus".
